great britain makes history

British baseball adds a page to its history book and arguably the most important addition since the game first began to take its stride in the U.K in the late 1800’s. Great Britain managed to defeat Rank#11 Columbia 7-5, at Chase Field, claiming its first World Baseball Classic Victory.

Columbia took an early lead and were 3-0 up by the top of the 4th. Great Britain battled back in the bottom of the 4th with runs from Harry Ford, Nick Ward and Darnell Sweeney. With the bases loaded after an intentional walk Matt Koperniak couldnt capitalise and grounded out to first to end the innings.

Great Britain added 4 unanswered runs between the 5th and 7th innings to advance their lead to a promising 7-3 going into the 9th.

A nail biting ending to the 9th inning as Columbia started to mount a comeback with a solo hit from Dilson Herrera and some fielding errors from Great Britain – Columbia rallied two runs in the top of the 9th. It ended with the Texas Rangers catcher Meibrys Viloria striking out swinging.
