Manchester Eagles's 2007 - Part 1This feature, and those to follow, will deal with the Manchester Eagle's and their exploits on the playing fields of England during the 2007 season. Eagles start season with double home win (29/04) - by Rob DenhamGame 1: 23-1 Birmingham came out the blocks scoring 1 run in the first inning, although it sent warning signs to the Eagles, it was to be their last of the game. Richard Klijn pitching a fantastic game with only 1 ER over 5 innings of work. The Eagles capitalised on a struggling pitcher by hitting the ball all over the field, most notably a grand slam home run from Danny Allen with his first at bat of the year. Game 2: 15-11 Dave McNeilage took the mound for the Eagles in the second game and pitched well up until the 4th inning when he tired and walked a number of batters and Birmingham's top/middle of the order began to hit pulling the game back to 7-6. It was then the turn of Eagles newcomer Russ Caspe to pitch. Birmingham in the next inning tied the game at 7-7, but the Eagles came out firing with a 2 out 2 RBI double from Ingo Gottwold and a 3 run home run from on-fire Danny Allen the Eagles once again pulled infront, which this time they would hold after a late scare in the top of the seventh. Eagles Split Twinbill at Menwith Hill (06/05) - by Russ CaspeGame 1: Richie Klijn picked up his 2nd win of the season as the Eagles bats roared through the Patriot pitching staff in the opener. Defensively the Eagles were near perfect, committing no errors and twice stranding leadoff runners in scoring position. In the first, Klijn worked out of a bases loaded 0 out jam with a strikeout followed by a 1-2-3 double play. Scoring early and scoring often, the Eagles put the game away with an 8 run 3rd capped buy Luis Armavillegas' 3-run homer-run to left field; his first of the year. The entire lineup contributed, every player scoring at least one run. Game 2: The nightcap didn't go as well for our heroes. The Eagles were trapped in the field as a cold rain steadily fell and Patriots steadily made there way around the bases. The Manchester bats that roared so loudly in game one, were silenced by the Menwith Hill moundsmen. While runners reached base here and there, the Eagles never mounted a serious threat. In splitting the doubleheader, both teams fell 1 game behind the first place Liverpool Trojans who swept the Birmingham Maple Leafs. Next week, the Eagles travel to Bolton for their first game against a Division 1 opponent this season, while the Patriots and Trojans face off at Harrogate. Pictures are available in the gallery.
